Past & Present

This April I visited a place very near and dear to my heart, Pensacola, Florida! From a small child through my teen years my Grammy & Pa Jones would take my cousins and I to Fort Pickens. We would camp for a week or two at a time.

Since Hurricane Opal in 1995, Fort Pickens and a large portion of Santa Rosa Island had been closed. In May of 2009 they announced the reopening of the road to Fort Pickens! I was so excited but also very pregnant at the time!

April of this year I was once again able to walk the same arched halls and courtyards that I had played in as a child! This time, I did it with my children! During our visit we took the daily tour…in all my visits I had never taken a tour! The Park Ranger asked us if we had previously visited the fort. My mother, “I have visited this area for 50 years.” She went on to explain that she had visited as a child with her parents, her parents had brought their grandchildren and now she was bring her grandchildren!
